Global Mandarin is a new digital media platform by Radio Free Asia (www.rfa.org) that aims to inform and engage with young Mandarin-speaking audience around the world. As it gears up to begin delivering independent information that presents various perspectives on subjects important to its audiences, Global Mandarin is currently seeking dynamic and motivated professionals skilled in the planning, preparation, and production of video projects to join its team and help it fulfill its mission by producing creative, polished, and engaging online multimedia content. This position will be based in Washington, DC; Hong Kong; or Taipei.

Responsibilities Include

  • Planning video projects from story development, research, proposal to production, and drawing upon strong creative skills to explore new trends and approaches to video storytelling.
  • Researching information online and from other relevant news sources – including archival footage and photos as well as public records and government data – to support and enrich story writing.
  • Translating stories into video scripts that may include a variety of visual elements, such as reporter stand-ups, B-rolls, studio interviews, Skype interviews, and other relevant footage.
  • Using production equipment – digital cameras, DSLRs, audio recorders, microphones, lights, and more to perform a range of tasks related to video production, including lighting set up, camera set up, interview shooting, and B-roll shooting.
  • Editing video at level consistent with an understanding of basic video editing concepts and strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly in Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
  • Editing first rough cuts drawing upon all available visual and audio means, including infographic design, data presentation, music, and sound effects.
  • Creating final cuts with finalized editing and simple motion design, animation, and special effects.
  • Delivering clean, clear, and creative final product packages, including final videos, promotional videos and short descriptions, finalized scripts for web, as well as thumbnails in different formats tailored for different platforms and user groups.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in broadcast or print journalism (at least one year full-time experience in a media company preferred), multimedia experience (including TV) and previous professional graphic design/video editing experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in video editing and ability to edit video using Adobe Premier and After Effects. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe Premier and After Effects and other graphics software (Canva), social analytics (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), and third-party social management tools.  Experience with Microsoft FrontLook, ENPS and audio software preferred.
  • Effective copywriting skills, intuitive knowledge of design, experience with visual storytelling, and ability to identify and select visual media (still image and video) that most effectively tells news stories
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly in Adobe Premiere and After Effects, and other graphics software (Canva), social analytics (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), and third-party social management tools.
  • Academic credentials (Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field from an accredited college or university preferred) or equivalent transferable skills showing ability to gather, produce, write, and present news and information clearly and objectively.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in China and surrounding countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment and discretion in evaluating and presenting news.
  • Experience managing social media platforms for news/media outlets and knowledge of and ability to utilize online media in creative and innovative ways and to adapt to new technologies as they evolve.
  • Strong general computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Required language skills: Spoken and written fluency in Mandarin and working proficiency in English

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conceiving, assigning, and editing stories on a variety of subjects and issues covered by Global Mandarin.
  • Identifying and soliciting freelance writers and reporters to join Global Mandarin’s contributor network.
  • Commissioning stories from freelance contributors.
  • Leading the entire process of producing and packaging special reports, from conception, planning, execution, to promotion.
  • Working with video and visual teams to produce visual components for the special report packages.
  • Creating an editorial calendar of upcoming feature stories and special report packages.
  • Researching and writing original feature stories, articles, and components of special reports.
  • Working with the Director to develop a strong and unique voice and tone for Global Mandarin.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in journalism editing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Superb editorial and Mandarin writing skills with a professional, established writing style.
  • Ability to identify story ideas that are consistent with Global Mandarin’s style and to solicit ideas from writers or commission ideas from freelancers and execute them into article pieces.
  • Familiarity with the field of journalism.
  • Ability to quickly establish and grow Global Mandarin’s freelancer and contributor network from inside and outside of China.
  • High degree of creativity and passion about building a brand from startup.
  • Must have a portfolio of previous work.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Required language skills: Fluency in written and verbal Mandarin Chinese and proficiency in written and verbal English.

Global Mandarin is seeking a smart, savvy staff writer for Wainao|WHYNOT, a Mandarin digital news magazine for young Chinese-speaking audience around the world. Our ideal candidate is self-motivated and versatile in covering different news topics and events.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Cover news events that drive Wainao’s audience’s interests.
  • Brainstorm with the team to develop new ideas to improve Wainao’s quality and performance.
  • Pitch and execute longer form stories in different formats such as features, interviews, commentary and/or editorial opinions.
  • Contribute to Waiano’s monthly Very Special Report and other special projects from topic selection, development to plan and execution.
  • Cultivate and grow a diverse base of reliable sources. Identify and pursue the most relevant interviewees for a story or for obtaining supporting material.
  • Contribute to video script writing, as well as social media posts, promotion campaigns and other projects as assigned.
  • Engage and moderate in social media and Wainao’s discussion forum as assigned.
  • Perform editorial tasks such as web editing and proofreading.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director and senior editors.

Qualifications:

  • BA in Journalism or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years feature writing experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Broad, deep knowledge of China related issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment as a member of a team and independently.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to multitask.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and follow through.
